I have some thoughts on the sexuality of Hikaru Sulu from Star Trek following reading io9.gizmodo.com/george-takei-tried-to-convince-the-team-behind-star-tre-1783306619 and heraldsun.com.au/entertainment/movies/star-trek-beyond-favourite-mr-sulu-has-come-out-as-castmates-reflect-on-the-death-of-anton-yelchin/news-story/51909410e4e465f825470c4dfbcc17ec

Sulu was born in 2230 (source: cygnus-x1.net/links/lcars/USS-Enterprise-Officers-Manual.php): three years before the USS Kelvin incident that split the timelines.
-
With no way that the new timeline could have affected his biology, we have to assume Sulu's innate sexuality is the same in both timelines.
-
So rather than being closeted in the old timeline - as Takei suggests - the better explanation is that Sulu is bisexual in both timelines.
-
In the old timeline, he falls in love with a woman; in the new timeline, with a man.
-
So, as with many headlines about a person revealing a same-sex relationship, headlines about Sulu being 'gay' are, likely, inaccurate.

Even @simonpegg in this response to Takei theguardian.com/film/2016/jul/08/simon-pegg-defends-gay-sulu-after-george-takei-criticism speaks in a very binary way about sexuality.
