  4. The second episode of @TAKEONECinema's new podcast series, The Dinopod, will be dropping on 23rd October 2024. In this episode, @JimGR and I critique THE LOST WORLD: JURASSIC PARK and the film's approach to ecological questions.
  5. What these robots do in footage that wasn't pre-prepared and pre-edited is walk forward slowly in a straight line so I'm sceptical that they will do whatever I can think of. @PopBase/1844594933518434642
  6. Deeply embarrassing that so many of you are openly revealing that you use BBC Weather who get their weather data from MeteoGroup rather than the more reliable Met Office.
  7. parkrun isn't a race, it's a run. That's why it's not called parkrace. When I get my results every week, I look at my time and compare it against previous times. There's no reason for me to look at any of the other data. @TessWhite4NE/1843224675918516266
  8. Sure, the technology is contributing to environmental impacts that will destroy the ecosystem but it'll also help us automate people out of jobs so who is to say if it's good or bad? @BLopenresearch/1843218206150058057

  9. Start and finish. Absolutely smashed my PB at the Great Scottish Run 10k. Thanks to generous donations, I raised £240 for Mind, the mental health charity.

  13. I knew I wouldn't like it and I went to see it anyway. MEGALOPOLIS irritated and bored me in roughly equal measures. letterboxd.com/simonxix/film/megalopolis-2024/
  14. If you're going to see JURASSIC PARK at a Cineworld today, you might want to make sure you're got the first episode of @TAKEONECinema's The Dinopod downloaded to listen to afterwards. @SimonXIX/1838861212127293846

  17. This was a great chat between James Louis Smith, Julien McHardy, and myself about writing in Markdown, publishing with Markdown, and encouraging academics to break out of their self-imposed Microsoft Word prison. @Copim_community/1838610507428745293
  18. I work for a post-92 UK university in a niche research centre and I had to take an e-learning module on why we shouldn't accept bribes. No-one even wants to bribe me and I still had to do more formal training than Government ministers and journalists. @pickwick/1838186996243538110

  20. As documented extensively in TAKE ONE Presents The Xenopod, our podcast series on the Alien franchise, James Cameron is a dickhead who has never given a shit about workers' rights. @DiscussingFilm/1838581688017846328
  21. First episode out tomorrow! Search for 'TAKE ONE Presents' in your podcast app and subscribe for an auto-download when it's released! @SimonXIX/1833849527243014644
  22. I waited a long time to finally see THE SUBSTANCE and was very excited for it. I think I hated it? Overlong, thematically incoherent, and mean-spirited in a way that really grated on me. Two excellent lead actors who the film consistently fails to make the best use of.
  23. This is a terrific article about a fascinating area in computational publishing. @JEPub/1837222805433438215
  24. I spent the afternoon wrestling with a tech issue by Googling the exact phrase in the error log. No results. I eventually found the answer in a conversation in a Google Groups group which used the exact phrase I'd been Googling. Which I guess isn't indexed by Google? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
  25. Enshittification has hit the humble @nationalrailenq app which used to be a functional little app that showed train times and saved your frequently checked stations. Now the "app" is just a shortcut to their website which looks worse, doesn't do as much, and is harder to use.
  26. The SNP need to post a copy of this to every person in Scotland because nothing is guaranteed to make them feel less British. @guardiang2/1836254461146337424
  27. Authors should also make sure to include the translator in any reference to cited work. @punctum_books/1836447223166673259
  28. Even if this were in any way true, I actually think you should have to accept some personal sacrifices in order to be Prime Minister. That's the price of power. @quendergeer/1835782443552362733
  29. The Sinn Féin voice ban is something that my partner and I reference probably far more than most couples. That and Gillian Duffy, that bigoted woman. @Roisin_Agnew/1835265197868454088
  30. I took my partner to a table tennis bar on our first date and we went on a boat on our second date so this does not, by definition, apply to all left-wing men. @Independent/1833853388678672860
  31. I'm excited to be producing a new podcast series coming soon from @TAKEONECinema. We'll be discussing the Jurassic Park (/World) franchise in-depth like in this preview clip discussing the first film's colonialism expressed through costuming.
  32. Boosting this. You better believe this paeon to open source software also contains some very specific gripes about niche library software and corporate library software suppliers. @SimonXIX/1833151273404686646
  33. A longer post in my open source newsletter this week discussing the various reasons for using open source software as part of digital liberation: security, customisability, and community. opensauce.simonxix.com/why-open-source/
  34. With a fair wind and if I get the public transport right, I live within 15 minutes walk or public transport of all these things. It's great. @SRDorman/1832746730523132381
  35. A lovely afternoon standing alongside friends and neighbours in Glasgow against the handful of fash that turned up. We had a counter-protest full of joy and chanting and sharing while the fash just seemed to stand around looking miserable. They didn't even do any chants. @SUTRScotland/1832438310662484223
  36. I spent so much of my time in leftist circles discussing class with people who believed that it was impossible to change class from the class you were born into. Wasted hours of my one wild and precious life. @keewa/1831964510380552479
  37. If you haven't been reading my newsletter about open source software and digital liberation, it's a good time to start. I'm publishing a big new piece next week about the role of open source in individual digital liberation and anti-capitalist struggle. opensauce.simonxix.com
  38. Very excited to be seeing @ComedyBangBang live later today. I missed the last UK tour and was prepared to travel to Manchester this time round but they're coming right to Glasgow! Between this and How Did This Get Made earlier this year, a good year for seeing live podcasts.
  39. Finally got my hands on my copy of @ultrabrilliant's Perfect Organism: An Alien: Isolation Companion. Looking forward to reading this book on one of my favourite games.
