                  1. Gremlins (1984) is the greatest Christmas-film-laden-with-troubling-Orientalism.

It's unclear how a creature like a Mogwai - allergic to sunlight and water and eating at certain times - can evolve and survive at all.

And as a genus, how do Mogwai work? They appear to be mammals in their benign state and reptiles in their 'Gremlin' state.

No-one in this film cares about the distress that the Mogwai seem to feel when they reproduce. They just watch them suffer.

There's also unexpectedly serious chat about seasonal depression and suicide around the holidays. Ahh, kids films from the '80s.

The design of the Mogwai cocoons is very obviously influenced by Alien (1979). Love to see Giger's nightmarish design influence in kids films.

Like @travismcelroy, I'm of the opinion that 'Gremlin' is a slur. Their species remains Mogwai even in their post-pupal state.

Spielberg used to be hella sassy.

When the post-pupal Mogwai are in the cinema, they watch Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937). If this was made today, I don't think Disney would allow this kind of use of their intellectual property.
