Blade Runner 2049's best part is it's absolutely gorgeous cinematography. It's a really stunning depiction of grimy future capitalism.
-
That's not an attempt to be damning with faint praise. It's an intelligent, sci-fi movie that really respects its audience.
-
But between Villeneuve's direction and Deakins' cinematography, it just looks incredible. Pacing and framing both reminiscent of Tarkovsky.
-
I don't compare to Tarkovsky lightly. But certain shots definitely reminded me of Solaris and Stalker.
-
It's interesting to compare it to Twin Peaks: both returns to 'perfect' properties that succeed by expanding on the original stories.
-
And interestingly, both were supposed to have David Bowie in them but unfortunately he died. He was supposed to be Jared Leto's character.
-
I absolutely would have preferred Bowie but Leto was very good in that role.
