A lot of people seem to be saying they'd rather have an edit function on Twitter than 280 characters. I vehemently disagree.
-
An edit function would be massively abused. Not only could it be used to gaslight people but it would exacerbate our 'post-truth' problems.
-
Let's imagine I'm a Nazi. I tweet an innocuous joke or picture of a cat that gets loads of RTs. I then edit it to say something offensive.
-
Let's say Donald Trump tweets something stupid and inflammatory. Instead of being a monument to his unfitness to hold office, he edits it.
-
A developer once said, when designing software functions, you should imagine how 4chan users will use that function. Imagine how 4chan users would use an edit function on Twitter.

(Unlike my joke tweets earlier, that last tweet was organically > 140 characters and I did the hack rather than deleting words. It begins.)
