Perhaps 'friendship' ≠ membership. Perhaps 'friendship' is like a membership+ scheme.

I am indeed wrong. This page fhlibrary.co.uk/friends-of-forest-hill-library/ clarifies that friendship and membership are not equivalent and that membership is free
