        1. Enjoyed CIVIL WAR a lot more than I thought I would and it didn't make me as viscerally angry as MEN. Unfortunately Alex Garland still thinks he's cleverer than the audience and his equivocation about discussing the obvious politics of his film is absolute moral cowardice.

He seems to think that the neutrality of war journalists in an active warzone is the same as the "neutrality" of centrism and this failure of understanding fundamentally comprises his characters.

Being coy about the politics of your American civil war works as a marketing tool to not alienate half your market but makes you look like a coward when someone actually watches your film and sees the honking great Trump analogue at the heart of it.

I went long on CIVIL WAR on Letterboxd because I felt that I had to. Alex Garland's latest film is either pointlessly shallow or actively harmful and either way he's shown his moral cowardice. He's no Jonathan Glazer. letterboxd.com/simonxix/film/civil-war-2024/

For more thoughts on CIVIL WAR, I can recommend @hangsawoman's review on her Substack (alisonrumfitt.substack.com/p/civil-war-is-loud-and-empty) and @clarisselou's review for The Independent (independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/films/reviews/civil-war-review-kirsten-dunst-b2526238.html) both of which actually engage with the politics Garland tries to deny.
