      The sad thing is they're doing this to get rid of the spam bots that the new owner thinks the site is full of (because his account attracts bot replies) but spammers are the only ones who will bother to pay for API access for their bots.

          Still thinking about this: if even a quarter of the developers who used the API decide to build scrapers instead, that's going to hit the website's performance in a significantly disastrous way.
