  1. Based on marathoning the Star Trek films over the last few weeks, I think William Shatner is unfairly maligned in popular imagination as centering Kirk in his movies. Patrick Stewart clearly exerts far more influence over Picard's movie characterisation than Shatner over Kirk.

Even the worst TOS movies are undeniably ensemble films whereas I think Generations gave a false impression to producers (inc. Stewart) that TNG movies should be Picard-centric. For the most part, the extended TNG cast gets absolutely nothing to do in their movies.

Patrick Stewart's influence over the production and writing of these films and his insistence that Picard have more to do as an action hero leads the franchise down a path that leads to the truly terrible Star Trek: Picard.

Another problem with the TNG films is that each one has a central idea that is explored better in a The Next Generation episode e.g. Nemesis' idea about the circumstances of your life making you who you are are better explored in a Q episode where Q fixes Picard's heart.
