For #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek, I wanted to talk briefly about the effect that the pandemic has had on my mental health. Personally I've had a privileged pandemic: haven't had Covid-19, have been able to work-from-home throughout, able to move to a bigger flat.

But I've felt a lot of sadness this year tending to depression at times. There's been an aura of death and misery and 150,000 preventable deaths in the UK that we don't seem to be collectively mourning.

Isolation has had the most impact on my social anxiety which has got worse and often exacerbated feelings of social isolation. I've never been great at texting or keeping in touch and this situation has made that a lot worse.

The last six months were particularly tough with the SAD of the winter months and watching from 200 miles away while my dad prepared for open heart surgery (he's fine, recovering well). I've been very thankful for my friends during these months even if we couldn't be together.

And of course I'm very thankful for my wife, Hels, who has not only kept my mental health on a more-or-less even tiller but produced incredible creative work through her poetry. She's the best. ❤️
