          1. Looking at @mbreeding's Library Automation Survey 2020 responses and particularly the comments which are full of the mistaken perception that you need more time, more developers, more IT support to use open-source library systems.

          It's simply wrong: open-source software can be cloud-hosted in exactly the same way as proprietary software and there are plenty of vendors who will host open-source library systems and provide support for them.

        Academic libraries seem to view open-source library systems as 'DIY systems' whereas nowadays they're just cloud-hosted systems like any other. The main difference is that you have more control and more creative control over one than the other.

      Also interesting that no-one seems to like their library management system. My hot take is that, with today's enterprise architecture for HE, library systems are specialist systems that in many cases work less well than the generalist systems that a university already has.

    Library management systems bolt together elements of a student records system, a finance management system, an inventory management system, etc. and so they end up not doing any of these tasks particularly well.
