            1. Started rewatching Hannibal again last night. Desperate lockdown times call for simmering homoeroticism against a backdrop of stunningly macabre beauty. @LeavittAlone/1270166419087523840

We're watching the Blu-ray set that my brother and sister-in-law got me for my birthday but Hannibal is also available on Amazon Prime Video in the UK and on Netflix in the USA.

Up to Eddie Izzard's fantastic turn as Abel Gideon. I read that the character is called Gideon because that was the name of Hannibal's character in early drafts of THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS before they knew they had the rights to the Hannibal Lecter character.

The rights to the Hannibal Lecter character are tied to Red Dragon so there's complexity around The Silence of the Lambs adaptations. Gideon in the Hannibal series is an obvious homage to Anthony Hopkins' Lecter and Izzard plays the character tremendously.

      H. with the most exasperation I've ever heard in her voice: "Ohh, why is Hannibal framing Will for murder? Come on now."

Two of the weakest killers-of-the-week in Hannibal — the totem of bodies in S1 and the bee hive killer in S2 — both get resolved by the FBI simply going to the killer's house and then the killer tells them that they did it. Even the writers got bored of those stories.

The bee hive killer is S02E04 especially. Neither Will or Hannibal even consult on the case. It's all solved in the background by Jack and the two forensics guys. This isn't the baroque queer murder art that I come to Hannibal for, sir!

Finished our big Hannibal rewatch. S03 is clearly the weakest: it loses the irony around Hannibal being a covert serial killer and sticks too closely to the source novels. But that final scene is undeniably perfect.
