Rewatching CASINO ROYALE. In the past year, the Bond film has become such a signifier for the issues with the film industry that it's easy to forget that there will be an actual film to watch at some point. And that some of the recent Bond films are actually very good.
-
There's a lot to like in CASINO ROYALE. The audacity of structuring a Bond film around a poker game and making it both cinematic and incredibly tense. Mads Mikkelsen's performance: probably the first time I ever saw him on screen. Eva Green is terrific.
-
There's also a lot of very distracting product placement for Sony products.
-
Bond also visits Gunther von Hagens' Body Worlds exhibition which very much dates the film. Remember when that exhibition was everywhere for a few years in the 2000s?
-
There's a good hour of the film before Eva Green's character is introduced and the main casino plot starts. It's very "When are they going to get to the fireworks factory?"

Some beautiful shots of Venice in this last sequence but more than anything it's just made me want to watch DON'T LOOK NOW again.
