      1. One of David Bowie's greatest artistic achievements was his final album, ★ (or Blackstar). It was released five years ago today on 8th January 2016 and there were two days for fans and critics to enjoy and interpret it before his death on 10th January 2016.

Bowie knew he was dying but the public did not and so ★ had two different contexts for interpretation in a matter of days. Before his death, it was an interesting and experimental record. His death and his foreknowledge of his death recontextualised it into a late masterpiece.

Because ★ is all about death and mortality in a way that is obvious in retrospect. Bowie knew it would be his last record and so he had the rare chance to write a conclusion to his career. It's astonishingly brave and powerful.

I was reeling after Bowie's death. I'd thought there must be some mistake: he'd just released an album! l turned to his music and I turned to his most recent release (which I hadn't really thought much of when I'd listened on the 8th).

Without his fans realising it, he'd already released the album that would help them come to terms with his death by expressing his own acceptance.
