ALIEN is a perfect film. We watched the 1979 theatrical release this time and I think it's better than the 2003 director's cut. Dallas disappearing works better with the film's exploration of space and the Unknown than Dallas' euthanasia in the director's cut.

This time I was mostly marvelling at how unlikeable Ian Holm plays Ash. Subtly repulsive in a way that's remarkable when you compare this role to his other affable roles like Bilbo Baggins.

I think I'm going to do a mini-season of ALIEN, ALIENS, and then answering the immortal question: will I still enjoy PROMETHEUS when I watch it again for the first time in years?

Rewatched PROMETHEUS for the first time in years last night. Buoyed along on the fumes of my residual nostalgia for the film but, good grief, the dialogue is diabolical and the production design is light years away from anything in ALIEN.

There's the recurrent Lost-era Lindelof obsessions with science vs. faith and father issues. It all feels so staid and familiar even while every character continually says out loud how momentous it all is (as well as stating what they're thinking and feeling at all times).

In summary, not as good as I remembered. Perhaps even actively bad.
