This homes in on cultural irony as a major generational divide and as a route to the rise of movements like the alt-right. It's something that I touched on in my MA dissertation on irony and sincerity in contemporary indie video games and an earlier essay on irony in South Park.

Broadly speaking I'd say that Gen X were steeped in irony in the way described by David Foster Wallace and others. Millennials and Gen Z straddle the line between irony and sincerity with some of their art blending them in a New Sincerity aesthetic.

Family Guy and South Park are bastions of ironic Gen X humour while newer sitcoms like Schitt's Creek are, to some extent, representations of a newer, more sincere humour.
