I've been watching WRECKAGE AND RAGE: a documentary directed by Charles de Lauzirika about the making of ALIEN 3. It is remarkably candid for a documentary that the studio included on a Blu-ray release and really delves into the troubled production of the film.
-
ALIEN 3 was given a release date before it had a script; the first director's vision was too expansive and the studio let him go; they brought in David Fincher to direct as his first feature film; they started shooting before they had a finalised script.
-
A real highlight is a sequence where they have H. R. Giger talking about the huge amount of incredible concept art he produced for this film (very little of which ends up in the final product) and they gradually fade him out and fade in producers saying it was all too much.
-
Another highlight is Michael Biehn saying he wanted have pushed so hard to be paid so much for his likeness rights if he'd known who David Fincher would turn out to be. Like I say, remarkably candid.
-
Like JODOROWSKY'S DUNE, it really brings to light the movie that was never made. The long sequence of Vincent Ward explaining his original vision of a monastic order living on a wooden planet who treat the Xenomorph as a demon is an incredible insight.

Fincher's original cinematographer sadly had to leave the shoot after a week or so due to Parkinson's and, though they talk around it, you can tell that Fincher didn't have nearly the same level of respect for his replacement.
