            1. I'm covering some of the mostly-online BFI #LFF so, in true film critic fashion, here's a reaction thread that I'll add to as I see more.

The first film I saw is embargoed but hopefully my review will be up before too long.

#LFF Abel Ferrara's SIBERIA. Some strikingly beautiful imagery at times but overall just too disconnected for me. It seemed to particularly lose focus in the second half. This one would really have benefited from being seen in a cinema rather than at home on a monitor.

Between SIBERIA and THE LIGHTHOUSE, 2020 is a banner year for horny Willem Dafoe movies.

#LFF Natalie Erika James' RELIC. Full review coming soon but this completely wrong-footed me—I was very concerned about where it was taking its themes of aging and decay—until the third act took a turn into Extremely My Shit and the ending was jaw-droppingly clever and cohesive.

#LFF Josephine Decker's SHIRLEY. Outstanding performances from Elisabeth Moss and Michael Stuhlbarg. Presenting Shirley Jackson through a brief slice of her life. The script seems to delight in defying biopic conventions. "What a lovely insouciant tone you have!"

#LFF Christian Petzold's latest film, UNDINE. I just want to see Paula Beer and Franz Rogowski together and happy. Is that too much to ask? THE SHAPE OF WATER but with the tenderness and subtlety of Petzold's TRANSIT.

#LFF Harry Macqueen's SUPERNOVA. What if THE TRIP but unutterably heartbreaking? Beautiful and tender and melancholy and lovely. Haven't cried this much at a film in ages.

#LFF Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart's WOLFWALKERS. Stunningly beautiful animation from Cartoon Saloon. Big points for the originality of setting an animated family film in the period of England's subjugation of the Irish with Cromwell as the villain he was. Full review coming.

#LFF ANOTHER ROUND (DRUK). Mads Mikkelsen and his friends decide their professional and social performance would be enhanced by maintaining 0.5% blood-alcohol content at all times. A terrific and joyous performance from Mads and a great film from the director of THE HUNT.

But you know what's not terrific and joyous? Excessive alcohol consumption. Hi, I'm Simon. We've all had a great time watching ANOTHER ROUND but let's talk seriously about...

#LFF THE HUMAN VOICE. A wee film shot in lockdown by Pedro Almodóvar and starring Tilda Swinton. Intensely vibrant and almost claustrophobic but a fascinating short adaptation of Jean Cocteau.

#LFF Catching up on the webinar with Natalie Erika James, the director of RELIC, which is (so far) my favourite film of the festival. You can read my review here of a great women-led horror film about dementia and decay. takeonecinema.net/2020/relic/

#LFF Brandon Cronenberg's POSSESSOR is embargoed until this evening when it goes on to @BFIPlayer. Full review coming soon but until then please enjoy this photo of the Ikea monkey.

#LFF Francis Lee's AMMONITE. Joins the canon of period dramas about queer women by the sea alongside PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE. But it's more dour and more English (and really don't they mean the same thing?) and ultimately more cold.
