With only the dissertation left on my MA in Cultural and Critical Studies, I'm reflecting on the work I've done as part of it. I've been particularly happy with the variety of work I've been allowed to do.
-
Serendipitously, every essay I've done has critiqued within a different medium: cinema (medium.com/@SimonXIX/magical-realism-essay-954e1cf7c205), television (medium.com/@SimonXIX/assessed-essay-black-trauma-and-the-representation-of-time-in-watchmen-306aa6e373fa), video games (medium.com/@SimonXIX/posthumanism-in-outer-wilds-4d88cd524a03), and a broader essay on theory and culture (medium.com/@SimonXIX/assessed-essay-ranci%C3%A8re-critique-and-irony-7e85ebf7fa9b).

The variety of cultural critique that the course allowed me to do has been really valuable for thinking critically about different media and for finding my focus.

There's no doubt that without doing this course, I wouldn't have started writing film reviews for publication (unfortunately paused right now for COVID and for dissertation times but still). It's given me a lot more confidence with writing criticism and talking critical theory.
