        1. Just like I put off reading The Broom of the System for ages because it would be my last David Foster Wallace novel, I've always put off watching THE STRAIGHT STORY, the last David Lynch feature film I have to watch. Finally doing it today as research for my MA dissertation.

What an absolute flex to make one of the most deeply unsettling films in all of cinema and then to go immediately into making a charming wee film about the pace of life.

Not to compare it too much to Lynch's more famous works because I think it stands on its own as a good film but there's definitely shots and elements of pacing that anticipate INLAND EMPIRE and, the masterpiece, Twin Peaks: The Return.

THE STRAIGHT STORY is a beautiful and deeply Lynchian film: not in the sense of being in the weird mode but in the sense of sincerely caring about characters and their struggles. When Harry Dean Stanton turned up and acted an infinity of emotion with his eyes, my heart burst.
