MIDSOMMAR: It took longer for me to start disliking it than HEREDITARY. It's time to accept that I do not get Ari Aster at all and that's OK.

MIDSOMMAR is full of technically impressive shots but when it's back-to-back One Perfect Shot™ shots then I am never not aware of the camera. And I just cannot get into it to actually feel anything.

Aster's aestheticization of suffering simply does not work for me. He seems to value aesthetics over character; style over substance. I'd contrast him with Eggers who perfectly balances aesthetics and character in his similar artsy horror films.
