The scene towards the end where Robert visits the cinema worker and is invited into his basement is one of the most tense scenes in cinema. The editing cuts off every shot just a few seconds before you expect and creates a heightened atmosphere of unease.Permalink On Internet Archive

It works because over the film's length Fincher has built up an atmosphere of paranoia and tension to such a degree that you (like Robert) are jumping at shadows.
