If UNCUT GEMS is a panic attack, THE LIGHTHOUSE is delirium. Massively uncomfortable, disturbing, and utterly beautiful. I don't think I've been as uncomfortable watching a film since BEYOND THE BLACK RAINBOW. Loved it.

It's properly bold film-making that has seeped into my blood. Please: more black-and-white films in unusual aspect ratios that deal with maritime mythology, claustrophobia, and madness.

I wanted it to end right up until I got out and now I just want to be watching it again. Very tempted to go to the double-screening of BAIT and THE LIGHTHOUSE at the BFI on Monday because that pairing would be an incredible experience.

Having had a night to think (/ dream) about THE LIGHTHOUSE, it reminds me most forcefully of Bergman's PERSONA: a (toxic) masculine mirror to PERSONA's feminine. Two people forced into cramped quarters together whose identities slowly merge and twist into each other.
