      1. Having read the Watchmen prequels and sequels, I didn't expect much from HBO's version of Watchmen. I didn't expect a show about racial trauma in America and the historical influence of white supremacy containing the most Surrealist imagery on TV since Twin Peaks: The Return.

I was sold when the show was examining the genetic trauma of black people living under white supremacy and that was before Jeremy Irons started fishing fetuses out of a moonlit lake and firing corpses into the sky with a catapult.

Utterly astonishing that Tim Blake Nelson had this kind of performance in him as Looking Glass. His episode about his trauma and his fear has some masterful writing in it.

The writing was also - and I'm writing with THE RISE OF SKYWALKER still in my head - brave. It did something boldly new, made interesting contemporary political statements from old IP, and acknowledged the grossness of some of the original characters (i.e. Rorschach).

Damon Lindelof's Watchmen understands that Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' Watchmen was trying to /say something/ about the politics of /its time/ and used the predominance of superhero comics to do that. HBO's Watchmen does the same thing now while culture is similarly saturated.

And that's something that DC's Watchmen sequel, Doomsday Clock, doesn't understand. It thinks Watchmen was about the characters rather than the message and that's why it's put the Watchmen characters in a regular crossover comic that doesn't fit for them.

Also Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross' score, as well as being great, has the same playful intertextuality of the show. The Watchmen Vol. 3 vinyl release is made to look like the album for The Manhattan Project from "The Nine Inch Nails" youtube.com/watch?v=QczxCxFRUf0
