  1. Greta Gerwig's LITTLE WOMEN takes a while to find its rhythm but once it does, it's a beautiful film about growing up, the passage of time, and proto-feminism. youtube.com/watch?v=AST2-4db4ic

Some thoughts about particular bits: Laura Dern has a complex and unfancy role that she absolutely nails. She has to be in the background while embodying Meg's patience, Jo's intelligence, Amy's ambition, and Beth's kindness. Her performance made me well up whenever she was on.

There's one shot where the March women are in the middleground walking to give their Christmas breakfast to a needy family and in the background people are pouring into church. It's a really economical way of saying a lot about the March family and society in one single shot.

I loved how the film sculpted time around emotional beats for the family: how the crosscutting between timelines becomes most confused and warped around the emotional black hole of a character's death.

I just want Laura Dern to be nominated for Best Supporting for her roles in Baumbach's MARRIAGE STORY and in Gerwig's LITTLE WOMEN and then I want husband and wife, Baumbach and Gerwig, to run parallel campaigns on her behalf. Ideally using cows.

Meryl Streep's character so disappointed by Amy's choices that she just straight-up dies. We stan an icon.
