STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER: more entertaining than I'd expected from the reviews but just so artless and so weightless. Every minute out of the cinema, I'm more disappointed by it.
-
It was just... nothing. Characters went from one plot point to another via set-pieces that didn't have any weight. Things happened only to be undone in the next scene or even WITHIN THE SAME SCENE.
-
Especially compared to STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI - which was, at many points, a beautiful film - the cinematography is not just dull but annoying. Not every shot needs to be a zoom or have something moving towards the frame. Not every scene needs to end with an ominous pan.

The complete contempt that it had for TLJ made me angry but Poe's character made me furious. His first interaction with Rey completely undid HIS ENTIRE ARC from TLJ which was about learning the humility required to lead.

At one point, Lando turns up (yay!) and C-3PO introduces him. This serves to introduce Lando to the new audience that this sequel trilogy was supposed to attract. Poe immediately belittles Threepio and says, "Yeah, we all know who he is."

That's what Abrams is doing with this film. He's smugly making fun of people who don't 'get it'. Poe's tone reminded me of Abrams' tone from his Kermode & Mayo interview last week in which he just struck me as weirdly rude and difficult.
