                    1. I've been re-reading A Song of Ice and Fire and, having finished A Game of Thrones last night, what really stands out is how tight all the pacing and timing is in that book compared to flabbier later books in the series and the TV show.

The way Daenerys' storyline develops is really masterful and the culmination of the last chapter is an incredible emotional catharsis. I'll be excited to see where Martin takes her storyline if he finishes the books because he clearly places prominence on the Dothraki stuff.

I've finished ASOS and am starting on the combined reading order for AFFC and ADWD. I think is an interesting example of remixing literature in a way that (potentially) improves upon structures imposed by editing and the requirements of physical monographs boiledleather.com/post/25902554148/a-new-readerfriendly-combined-reading-order-for-a

Martin's writing is Dickensian in that he's a gardener when it comes to characters and he writes in a serialised way. he's been given a lot of flexibility in publishing but I think ASOIAF would have benefitted from a less rigid 'traditional book' structure.

I'll see how this reading order for AFFC and ADWD chapters helps (or not) with addressing that. It's already thrown up some interesting parallels in the prologues alone and how they 'respond' to ASOS.

Back on my ASOIAF bullshit and reading ADWD confirms I'm still a Stannis stan. Book!Stannis is hard and difficult and stubborn and deluded but he's also right and does his duty to the kingdom even when everyone around him ignores him.

Show!Stannis was written out way too quickly after the show ran further than Martin's narrative for Stannis. I think Book!Stannis will do more in the battle against the Others and that his tragic end, while similar to the show, will actually be tragic.

About a third of the way through the combined AFFC-ADWD. This combined reading order makes AFFC less of a slog and vastly improves the reading experience. But, by the Seven, the Brienne chapters in AFFC are still hardgoing.

Brienne of Tarth is a great character but her seemingly endless wandering aimlessly through the Crownlands meeting dull characters who make no impact on the story and failing to find Sansa are a real lowpoint of ASOIAF.

Because ADWD's narrative extends further chronologically than AFFC, I've reached the point in the combined reading order where AFFC is (thankfully) finished and there's 42% of ADWD remaining.
