        1. #fantastic19 Kirsty Sedgman is talking about the 'paradox of value' in theatre whereby the bigger and more popular a show is, the less valued it is by academic discourse. I think we see the same with films and blockbusters like the MCU.

#fantastic19 We're immediately on to critical theory and the Frankfurt School's hypodermic model in which culture and media (even seemingly innocuous media) are able to 'inject' messages (and propaganda) into the audience's consciousness.

#fantastic19 First mention of Bourdieau specifically his model of taste. Bourdieau is the first bingo slot on the cultural studies bingo card for this conference.

#fantastic19 Fan studies as a discipline pushes against the view of audiences as passive, isolated, and vulnerable. Content creators have power but audiences also have power. There's a tension between the power and agency of media and the power / agency of audiences.

#fantastic19 A tension is emerging in Sedgman's talk between the critical mode and the pleasurable mode. If you go into, say, a sequin-y musical with a critical eye, you may not be able to access the pleasurable mode of appreciating theatre as entertainment.

#fantastic19 Value is not an endpoint. Value is a process constructed in the audience by experiences. There's something generous about accessible shows or media that create value without the need for the Bourdieian cultural capital of "artier", more "worthy" shows.
