      1. So I went to see the @V_and_A's #DesignPlayDisrupt exhibition at the weekend and really enjoyed it. It's very well put-together and reflects a good selection of the different cultural and artistic aspects of contemporary videogames. @SimonXIX/1038013854997983232

The deliberate choice to eschew a nostalgic view of videogames and focus on the contemporary was very effective. Too often these kinds of exhibitions get bogged down in history rather than tackling contemporary issues and this exhibition deftly avoided that.

I think, despite its best efforts, the exhibition's prominent focus on particular games in the first room does serve to make those games into a sort of canon. But the insights into individual games (Journey, Bloodborne, Splatoon, Kentucky Route Zero, etc.) was my favourite part.

The second room, highlighting issues in videogames around e.g. gun violence, Western-centric development, and diversity issues in development, did what it was supposed to do and provide a useful summary of the issues. I could have done with more depth and more problematising.

The absolute best thing on display was Tale of Tales' Realtime Art Manifesto (tale-of-tales.com/tales/RAM.html) which is not only a great insight into game design but potentially useful for my imagined future PhD research.
