  1. We went to see Spike Lee's BlacKkKlansman (2018) over the weekend. It's an interesting film, particularly in its depiction of the differences between 'Black Power' and 'White Power' movements.

The film ably shows how one movement is progressive aimed at redressing power imbalances and the other is regressive aimed at preserving the status quo of power relations; one movement is open and proud and the other hides behind masks and anonymity.

The film itself lacks subtlety particularly in how it links historical events to contemporary politics and I think that's because Lee doesn't want to be subtle. So the lack of subtlety and the winks at the audience with lines about 'Making America Great Again' become Brechtian.

Like Lee's other Brechtian devices in this film and his other films, these are supposed to remind you that this is a film with shocking contemporary relevance and that the white supremacists are now in power in America and that is incredibly NOT RIGHT.
