    1. It's been a disappointing day but I've now got some whisky and got the projector fired up for the first time in months for House on Haunted Hill (1959) with Vincent Price.

The film starts with an early example of a jump-scare as a woman screams out of the darkness before any images come on screen. Think how effective that must have been to an audience in the '50s.

In this film, Vincent Price delivers the line "It's close to midnight.": a clear reference to Michael Jackson's Thriller and proof positive that Vincent Price became unstuck in time during his life.

The plot of this film involves five strangers being invited to a spooky mansion house to stay the night and then being picked off one by one and tbh it's making me want to watch Clue (1985) again. Now there's a film.

I'm watching this with an eye to the monumental horror image and cosmic fear in horror films as articulated by @theseantcollins in this thread and the accompanying essay. It contains some good examples of the monumental horror image. @theseantcollins/1006931565937610754?s=19
